The problem

The series had to show country that a camera cannot reach: geology across millions of years, and a scale that a drone shot flattens the moment it tries. Live action alone could not carry it, and a fully animated sequence would have broken the documentary's register. The brief also kept moving as the edit found its shape.

What we did

  1. 01Built a hybrid pipeline so CG elements could sit inside graded live-action plates without announcing themselves as CG.
  2. 02Blocked sequences early and cheap, so the edit could keep changing its mind without burning render days.
  3. 03Kept one clear technical channel open to the director and producers: what was possible, what it would cost in time, and what it would not do.
  4. 04Delivered to broadcast spec for ABC, with review turnarounds tight enough to keep post moving.

Where it landed

The sequences featured as part of the series on ABC iview. Broadcasters, producers and the VFX director signed off happy, and the pivots that happened mid-project never showed up on screen.

Hybrid 3D · VFX

Ayuvam's professionalism and creative input into this project were excellent. Their effective turnaround timeframes and clear creative and technical communication made this hybrid 3D project possible. As the project continued to pivot, the team was flexible and accommodating, and the end result is one that broadcasters, producers and I are very happy with. We would absolutely work with Ayuvam again, and I thank them for delivering for us when timeframes were tight.
